Sitting in the sunny upper level of a coffee shop, people are laughing, smiling, enjoying a moment of community as we watch each other get their scalps burned. It’s the new trend. The burn pattern depends on the temp of the metal brand used and how long it is held there. The most painful burns result in the most colorful scars. I don’t want to get one myself, but I find myself drawn to the beauty of others’ endurance. A man is sitting across the room. Chatting with friends or family, his is bald and in his late 40s. His scar is so lovely, I find myself staring at it. Irregular rings of dandelion, heather, midnight, fuchsia….

Like agate.

Like oil on water.
